In March 2021, VolkerGround Engineering was awarded a contract by BAM Nuttal to support them with the construction of the new Thanet Parkway railway station, building platforms, overpass access and access roads in Cliffsend, Kent.
Under weekend possession, utilising a 38 tonne excavator and 60 tonne long reach MOVAX, VolkerGround Engineering installed four rows of 9.5 metre long steel sheet piles perpendicular to the rail tracks; two parallel lines north side and two south side. These would later enable the construction of the new platforms being built over an existing water main.
Piling from a single platform and with an inter-site move underneath the railway bridge, the team also installed 30 Circular Hollow Section (CHS) piles, up to 15m long either side of the railway to support the access bridges for the new platforms. These piles were designed in-house, along side BAM and the Cat 3 Checker to ensure compliance with all necessary load conditions and standards.
Working from a lower level adjacent to the railway line, VolkerGround Engineering installed 32, 450mm diameter Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piles, to enable the construction of the platform access stairs and lifts on the north and south sides of the tracks.
